“Controlled” debris fires are the #1
cause of wildfires on state and public lands. On average, 90% of homes in California that had noncombustible roofs and 30 feet of defensible space did not burn. The location of a home does not necessarily determine ignition risk. How ignitable a home is determines risk. 88% of all the nation’s wildland fires between 1988 and 1997 were started by people, and burned nearly 2 million acres a year. The two main factors that determine a homes ability to survive wildfire are its roofing material and the quality of its defensible space. Sage brush environments can burn at a rate of 3400 acres per hour, traveling at a rate of 6.5 mph with flames reaching 22 feet high. |
